HRH 1 CC King of England

A bit about the Mercian Regiment ( One of Englands longest standing Regiments)

The Mercian Regiment is the Infantry of the heart of modern England, built on centuries of fighting tradition from locally recruited men. Proud of our past, but confident and forward-looking, we epitomise the capable, versatile, can-do soldier of today’s Infantry: committed to delivering operational success through professional excellence. Our qualities are timeless: kinship and comradeship, family bonds, unambiguous values, and a robust and stoic no-nonsense approach on the battlefield.

Professional Excellence. In everything we do we maintain the very highest professional standards. This is our single greatest priority. Mercian is synonymous with professional and operational excellence.

Unambiguous Values. The values of the Mercian Regiment are a common understanding of right and wrong; what is acceptable and what is not. Courage, commitment, honour and decency are valued above all else. Soldiers will always be treated with respect.

Flexibility.  The Army of today and tomorrow aims to be expeditionary and agile. To match these aspirations we will be flexible, no-nonsense and unfailiningly can-do in our approach. We will throw ourselves enthusiastically into everything we undertake. We will be comfortable with uncertainty and mentally light on our feet.

Kinship. The Mercian Regiment is a family. Local links will be maintained and developed.   Each Soldier and Officer can be confident that the Regiment will be there for them in a time of need. The same applies to their families and members of the Regimental Association.

Robustness.     Our reputation and utility is reliant on robustness. Fitness is fundamental to everything we seek to achieve: we lack credibility as Infantrymen if we are not fit and both mentally and physically robust.

Confidence.    We will hold our heads high: we have much to be proud of.  Whilst maintaining humility we will be clear that there is no better Infantry Regiment in the British Army.

The United States Army is a military organization whose primary mission is to "provide necessary forces and capabilities ... in support of the National Security and Defense Strategies."[1]

It is the largest, and by some standards, the oldest established branch of the armed forces of the United States and is one of seven uniformed services. Like all armies, it has the primary responsibility for land-based military operations. The modern Army had its roots in the Continental Army which was formed on June 14, 1775, before the establishment of the United States, to meet the demands of the American Revolutionary War. Congress created the United States Army on June 14, 1784 after the end of the war to replace the disbanded Continental Army. The Army considers itself to be descended from the Continental Army, and thus dates its inception from the origins of that force.[2]

Control and operation of the Army is administered by the Department of the Army, one of the three service departments of the Department of Defense. The civilian head is the Secretary of the Army and the highest ranking military officer in the department is the Chief of Staff, unless the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff or Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are Army officers. As of August 31, 2007, the Regular Army reported a strength of 519,472 soldiers.[3] By the end of 2006, the Army National Guard (ARNG) reported 346,288 and the United States Army Reserve (USAR) reported 189,975, putting the approximate combined component strength total at 1,055,734.[4]

The British Army is the land armed forces branch of the British Armed Forces. It came into being with unification of the Kingdoms of England and Scotland into the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1707. The new British Army incorporated Regiments that had already existed in England and Scotland and was administered by the War Office from London. Since 1963, it has been managed by the Ministry of Defence.

As of April 2007, the British Army includes roughly 101,310 regular personnel and 38,460 Territorial Army members. The full-time element of the British Army has also been referred to as the Regular Army since the creation of the reservist Territorial Army in 1908. The British Army is deployed in many of the world's war zones as part of both Expeditionary Forces and in United Nations Peacekeeping forces. The British Army is currently deployed in Kosovo, Cyprus, Germany, Iraq, Afghanistan and many other places.

In contrast to the Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Royal Air Force, the British Army does not include "Royal" in its title, however many of its constituent Regiments and Corps are styled Royal.[1]

The professional head of the British Army is the Chief of the General Staff, currently Sir Richard Dannatt.

The Emperor Constantine I was exposed to Christianity by his mother, Helena. There is scholarly controversy, however, as to whether Constantine adopted his mother's Christianity in his youth, or whether he adopted it gradually over the course of his life.[3] Constantine was over 40 when he finally declared himself a Christian.[4] Writing to Christians, Constantine made clear that he owed his successes to the protection of that High God alone.[5]

Constantine I, Roman Emperor adopted Christianity following his victory in the Battle of Milvian Bridge 312. Under his rule, Christianity rose to become the dominant religion in the Roman Empire, and for his example of a "Christian monarch" Constantine is revered as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Not only the details of his adoption of Christianity make the religious beliefs of Constantine I interesting; Theologians and historians alike have argued about the question to which form of Christianity Constantine ultimately converted, with regard to the legitimation of religious persecution.

Though Emperor Constantine I had been exposed to Christianity by his mother, St. Helena, there is scholarly controversy as to whether he adopted his mother's Christianity in his youth, or whether he adopted it gradually over the course of his life.[1] Whatever the case, the accession of Constantine was a turning point for the Christian Church. In 313, Constantine issued the Edict of Milan, legalizing Christian worship, and the emperor would be a great patron of the Church and set a precedent for the position of the Christian Emperor within the Church that would be followed for centuries.

Constantine, named Flavius Valerius Constantinus, was born in the Moesian military city of Naissus (Niš, Serbia) on the 27th of February of an uncertain year,[23] probably near 272.[24] His father was Flavius Constantius, a native of Moesia Superior (later Dacia Ripensis).[25] Constantius was a tolerant and politically skilled man.[26] Constantine probably spent little time with his father.[27] Constantius was an officer in the Roman army in 272, part of the Emperor Aurelian's imperial bodyguard. Constantius advanced through the ranks, earning the governorship of Dalmatia from Emperor Diocletian, another of Aurelian's Illyrian companions, in 284 or 285.[25] Constantine's mother was Helena, a Bithynian of humble origin. It is uncertain whether she was legally married to Constantius or merely his concubine.[28]

In July 285, Diocletian declared Maximian, another colleague from Illyricum, his co-emperor. Each emperor would have his own court, his own military and administrative faculties, and each would rule with a separate praetorian prefect as chief lieutenant.[29] Maximian ruled in the West, from his capitals at Mediolanum (Milan, Italy) or Augusta Treverorum (Trier, Germany), while Diocletian ruled in the East, from Nicomedia (İzmit, Turkey). The division was merely pragmatic: the Empire was called "indivisible" in official panegyric,[30] and both emperors could move freely throughout the Empire.[31] In 288, Maximian appointed Constantius to serve as his praetorian prefect in Gaul. Constantius left Helena to marry Maximian's stepdaughter Theodora in 288 or 289.[32]

Diocletian divided the Empire again in 293, appointing two Caesars (junior emperors) to rule over further subdivisions of East and West. Each would be subordinate to their respective Augustus (senior emperor) but would act with supreme authority in his assigned lands. This system would later be called the Tetrarchy. Diocletian's first appointee for the office of Caesar was Constantius; his second was Galerius, a native of Felix Romuliana (Gamzigrad, Serbia). According to Lactantius, Galerius was a brutal, animalistic man. Although he shared the paganism of Rome's aristocracy, he seemed to them an alien figure, a semi-barbarian.[33] On March 1, Constantius was promoted to the office of Caesar, and dispatched to Gaul to fight the rebels Carausius and Allectus.[34] In spite of meritocratic overtones, the Tetrarchy retained vestiges of hereditary privilege,[35] and Constantine became the prime candidate for future appointment as Caesar as soon as his father took the position. Constantine left the Balkans for the court of Diocletian, where he lived as his father's heir presumptive.[36]

In Christendom the cross reminds Christians of God's act of love and atonement in Christ's sacrifice at Calvary—"the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world." The cross also reminds Christians of Jesus' victory over sin and death, since it is believed that through His death and resurrection He conquered death itself.

Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, members of the major branches of Lutheranism, some Anglicans, and other Christians often make the sign of the cross upon themselves. This was already a common Christian practice in the time of Tertullian.[9] One of the twelve great feasts in the Eastern Orthodox Church is the Exaltation of the Cross on September 14, which commemorates the consecration of the basilica on the site where the original cross of Jesus was reportedly discovered in 326 by Helena of Constantinople, mother of Constantine the Great. The Catholic Church celebrates the feast on the same day and under the same name ("In Exaltatione Sanctae Crucis"), though in English it has been called the feast of the Triumph of the Cross. Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Anglican bishops place a cross [+] before the name when signing a document.

The Christian cross is the best-known religious symbol of Christianity. It is generally seen as a representation of the crucifixion of Jesus. It is related to the crucifix (a cross that includes a representation of Jesus' body) and to the more general family of cross symbols.
